Urban Development | Sài Gòn (HCMC) | 2007-2013

Chung’s cartographic practice began in 2007, when she relocated to Sài Gòn (HCMC) to intensively research cartography and urban planning maps related to redevelopment projects in Vietnam. Chung was particularly taken by the shifts in the landscape in the outskirt of Sài Gòn, where rural and urban intersect - gigantic land craters were formed pervasively in these areas due to soil extraction for land reclamation in other booming construction sites. The spatial shifts in the city happened with skyrocketing real estate values, which were propelled rapidly with foreign investment pouring into these urban megaprojects, leading to population displacement.
